When we first moved into our home, I remember being surprised at home many keys we would need! A house comes with a lot more keys than our little apartment ever did. After a few weeks of fumbling around to try to find the right key any time I wanted to enter my home, I discovered that I could easily keep track of my keys with this nail polish trick!
Keep Track of your Keys with this Nail Polish Trick
It’s incredibly easy to do! All you need in some old nail polish in a variety of colors and your keys. I don’t know about you, but I had some super old nail polish (I think from college!) in the back of my bathroom closet. It moved into the bathroom of my new house with all the stuff from my bathroom in my old house.
If you’re better at getting rid of things than I am, first teach me your ways. Then, ask your friends if they have old nail polishes you can borrow. Tell them about this key idea, I bet they want to do it too!
If you don’t want to ask your friends, you can pick up some super cheap nail polish at the dollar store or you could even find some super cheap nail polishes on amazon.
When you have your nail polish, you are ready to go.
Here is what I did:
I set my keys out on a sheet of cheap, dollar store tin foil. I keep a roll of cheap tinfoil in the house just for non-food related purposes, mostly painting. I like to put tinfoil on my work surface instead of newspaper or a paper towel because if when I dripped any nail polish it wouldn’t stick to the tinfoil like it would to a paper product. {Paint doesn’t stick to tinfoil so it is an amazing tool for all things paint.}
All I had to do was paint the top part of each key a different color. I used blue for the back door (blue=back is how I remember that), and colors that I liked for the rest of my keys. I made a little list on a post it of which color was on the key for which door.
I painted my husband’s keys, too. He liked the idea and didn’t mind having colorful keys. I made sure that I painted his keys with the same color code that I used for mine. So, both of our back door keys are blue, both of our front door keys are purple, etc. This makes life so much easier. When we grab each other’s keys for something, we still know which color key to use.
This little project took me a half hour to complete, at the most. Just make sure you let your keys dry before putting them back on your key ring and you are good to go!

This does work well since most people have more then 4 keys. I love this idea and thank you for sharing at Dishing it and Digging it link party. We love having you and hope to see you this coming Sunday.

We did this at work with filing cabinet keys, we have a whole bank of them all colour coded now! It does start to scratch off after a while but it’s easy enough to touch up. I do love a simple but effective idea. (and I’m with you on the “lots of old bottles rather than super organised” thing, you never know when these things will come in handy!)
