Secret Ingredient Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

This is my new FAVORITE breakfast! Its easy, delicious, and filling! Try my Secret Ingredient Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal today. {Read below to discover the secret ingredient.}

This secret ingredient apple cinnamon oatmeal is so yummy! It's super easy to make and super filling! The secret ingredient really does make it so much better!!

When I used to think of oatmeal, I’d think of the instant oatmeal of my childhood. And that oatmeal wasn’t terrible, but I never really wanted to eat it.

I came across some oatmeal recipes last year and wanted to try one. It was good! It was much better than the instant oatmeal I remembered.

So, ever since then, I’ve been playing around with oatmeal recipes and trying to improve them. I added a little more of what I like and took out some things that I wanted less of. Then, one day when I was trying to use up some things in my fridge, I decided to add a new ingredient to my oatmeal:

Applesauce

And wow! It made everything about my oatmeal better! It was absolutely delicious. So I played around with it some more and eventually ended up with this incredibly delicious Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal recipe.

Serves: 2

Ingredients:

1 cup milk

½ cup water

1 cup rolled oats

3 tbsp unsweetened applesauce (Hooray! Secret Ingredient!)

½ apple chopped (I love Granny Smith, any apple will do)

1 handful of walnuts, chopped or broken by hand into small pieces

2 tsp pure maple syrup (or honey, if you prefer)

1 tsp cinnamon + a sprinkle for the top

Directions:

Add milk and water to a small pot and stir.

Cover and warm over medium heat until liquid begins to bubble.

Add oats. Stir and recover. Reduce heat to low.

Let your oatmeal simmer for 4-5 minutes.

Stir in applesauce. Then, stir in maple syrup and cinnamon.

Reserve some apple and walnut (if using) pieces for topping and stir in the rest.

Split Oatmeal into 2 bowls. Top with the rest of the apples and walnuts. Sprinkle with cinnamon.

Tip: Milk and water mixture will begin to bubble quickly–usually in a few minutes. I like to stay close to the stove so it doesn’t bubble over. I chop my apple and walnuts while the liquid is warming and its usually ready by the time I’m done.

Enjoy!

My hubby and I like oatmeal but have been guilty of doing the instant thing. This looks much tastier and ready almost as quickly. Putting this one on my list to try!
